Welcome
Most communities in Africa are without health care and proper sanitation facilities; the majority of the continent’s hospitals are without electricity, while most schools lack adequate and appropriate teaching and study aids, and permanent classroom buildings capable of withstanding even the mild vagaries of the weather.
In addition, a great many disabled and elderly Africans suffer from neglect, and the continent’s most underprivileged people include hundreds of millions of children who are affected by many preventable diseases. This is only a partial portrait of the development problems against which hundreds of millions of Africans struggle each day.
These are the conditions that formed the background for the birth of Focus on Africa Society (FOCUS) in 1996 by a group of Canadian professionals of rural African backgrounds who have a keen and experiential awareness of, and sound appreciation for, the developmental challenges facing rural Africans. In keeping with the Society Act, however, the control, direction and supervision of FOCUS remains Canadian at all times.
